What happens at a Nepali wedding?
Nepali weddings vary a great deal between communities and families, so there is no single script. Many Hindu Nepali weddings include a janti, the groom's wedding party arriving to meet the bride's family, and a welcome with tika and flowers. The couple often exchange garlands in the jaimala, and the groom places sindoor and a pote, the green glass bead necklace, on the bride as a sign of marriage.
The ceremony itself is usually held at a mandap, with a sacred fire, prayers and blessings from elders. Communities such as the Newar, Gurung, Magar, Tamang and Rai each follow their own customs, music and dress. A good venue leaves room for your family to do things the way your family does them.
